| ..Trekking
to Mount Roraima |
Roraima:
is a sandstone tabletop mountain that stands out more than 1000 meters
over the wooded savannahs surrounding it. Located in the southwest
corner of Canaima National Park, of about 30.000 km². It is one of
the places with the most ancient geology in the planet, going back to
the pleistocene, around two thousand million years ago.
It is in addition, the highest point in a 549.44 km radius. Next in
size being Marahuaca hill, to the west-southwest. Its average height is
about 2500 meters above sea level with its vertical walls making access
very difficult. Nevertheless Roraima was the first among the great
tepuis in being crowned: Sir Everard im Thurn climbed its hillsides in
1884
through a forested ramp. Reports of victorian expeditions to this
mount inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write in
1912 The Lost World his classic adventure
novel, from which several screenplays and films have been realized.
To subsist in the harsh conditions
atop the tepuis, many species have adapted and overcome the extreme
situation, rocky soil, lack of nutrients and nitrogen.
This is how certain kinds of plant live specifically in these parts
some of which cannot be found anywhere else in the word, known as "endemism " ( Endemic
vegetation, exclusive to a place). |

stronger. Our guides will help us through. From the rivers to La Base

enjoy the great sights, carnivorous plants and orchids. Lunch at the

the jungle or freshen up in the little river near the campsite. Dinner
takes place at campsite as well.

Day
|
|
First two hours is a
steep walk up the jungle. After such an effort, Mother Nature rewards
us with the beauty of the forest. At last you can touch Roraima's wall
for the first time. You need another 90 minutes to reach the summit, at
2800 meters. At the top we're greeted by stones resembling turtles or a
dragon's head. Lunch at campsite and the afternoon is to discover the
top and edge of the mountain. We dine at the campsite.

Day
|
|
All day to roam the
mountain top. We feel the magic of Roraima. We see a thousand
whimsical shapes in the stones, animals, the face of Fidel Castro or
Bolivar's, fantasy figures. We enjoy the valley of crystals with its
special atmosphere and the panoramic view towards the savannah. We feel
the mystic touch, when the fog goes up the mountain and closes up on
us. Don't be surprised to feel like you're on The Moon or in another
world. Lunch on the road, dinner at campsite.
|
Day
|
| In the morning, a chance to snap the last pictures
and later we have to get down from the mountain to the Tök River Camp. We walk 7 hours
today from 2800 meters to 1050 m. First there's two to three hours of a
steep way down to the Base camp, where we have lunch.. At
the campsite, we freshen up in the river below a small waterfall with a
view of Roraima and Kukenán. Dinner at campsite. |
Day
|
We have the last four hours left 'til Paraitepuy.
We've got to cross again the two rivers from the first day.
It is strictly forbidden to take crystals from the area, so all
tourists will be inspected by the Park rangers. Our Toyotas are
already waiting with cold beverages and lunch. After lunch, we go back
to Santa Elena and if the group is willing we make a stop at Quebrada
de Jaspe (great river on a jasper rock bed).
